On that particular Thursday, I was doing my rounds of the wards, when I received a call from Bridlington Hospital, which was about twenty miles away. “Are you Mr M, the new thoracic surgeon?” My caller was the consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Casualty Department. He sounded alarmed. “I have a man - a police inspector. He’s got a number of stab wounds. And a kind of dagger. It’s still in his chest. I think it’s pierced his heart. About the author: Professor Keyvan Moghissi, at 91, is still engaged in medicine and travels the world for conferences, sharing his experience with his colleagues. He is one of the UK’s leading Cardiothoracic Surgeons, with many books, papers, articles and presentations to his name. He obtained first degrees at the University of Geneva, before embarking on postgraduate studies in General and Chest surgery in Switzerland and the UK. His training continued at Southampton Chest Hospital and as a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at Southampton University, where he won two Wessex Research Prizes. He was then awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Following this, he worked in rotation between Hammersmith, Harefield and the Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital in London. In 1970, he was appointed Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Hull, with a mission to establish open-heart surgery at Castle Hill Hospital. In the 1970s and 1980s, KM became one of the Founding Fathers of the Thoracic Surgical Club and the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), for which he served as its second President. He also played a major role in the foundation of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). In 1985, KM undertook pioneering laser surgery of the chest and was the first cardiothoracic surgeon in Europe to use laser to remove secondary breast cancer from the lung without loss of lung tissue. In 1989, he was part of an international team pioneering the use of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for lung cancer in the UK and Europe. KM was key to the creation of the Yorkshire Laser Centre – the project of a charitable trust, The Moghissi Laser Trust (Reg charity no: 326689) He was also responsible for the foundation of the European Platform for Photodynamic Medicine (EPPM) in 2006, and became its first President. KM has been honoured with membership of L’Academie de Chirurgie (Paris), an honorary Visiting Professorship from Guang Zhou University (China) and honorary membership of a number of other international and European Associations. His honours include awards for contribution to science and cardiothoracic surgery from Russia and an Award for Life Long Contribution to Cardiothoracic Surgery from the World Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He studied music in parallel with his school and medical studies and, in 1954 , qualified in Violin under Professor Fernand Closset (Diplome de Capacité), at the Conservatoire Populaire de Musique de Genève.
